How to find the IP address of a website

If you really really must know the IP address of a website, there are a couple of options:

1. Use the ‘ping’ function

In Windows, select ‘Run’ from the Start menu (or use Windows+R). In the dialogue box, type ‘cmd’ to bring up the command prompt. In the prompt, type ‘ping example.com’ (without quote marks) to find out the IP address.

2. Use WHOIS to look up the website details

WHOIS is a database (or series of databases) containing information about websites, such as who owns them and (usually) their IP address.

Far from just being delicious ovoids of chocolate, easter eggs are also “hidden features or novelties that programmer have put in their software“, and unsurprisingly, Firefox has a lot of them scattered around.

The one I discovered most recently is about:robots (Note: if you’re not using Firefox, this link won’t do very much), which contains a whole host of information about our plastic pals. Another Easter egg in Firefox is The Book of Mozilla, charting the rise of Firefox through the ages.

The best easter egg of all, though, has got to be this one.

Microsoft has cut access to Xbox Live for thousands of Xbox users who have chipped their consoles, meaning that these owners can no longer play online.

While this raises all sorts of questions about DRM and privacy (and is similar to Amazon’s recent e-book burning), this article is definitely the highlight of the story.
